WP3 - Risk management and environmental benefit analysis

Work package 3 will demonstrate how the socio-economic benefits of water reuse schemes can be maximized while negative health and environmental impacts are kept to an acceptable level, using state-of-the-art methods for the assessment and management of environmental and human health risks. Moreover, a holistic and sound basis for decision making will be elaborated by combining the methods for risk assessment, life cycle assessment and water resource impact assessment, thus taking into account both local (direct) effects as well as regional/global (indirect) health and environmental impacts.

Work package 3 will demonstrate how the socio - economic benefits of water reuse schemes can be maximized while negative health and environmental impacts are kept to an acceptable level, using state-of-the-art methods for the assessment and management of environmental and human health risks. Moreover, a holistic and sound basis for decision making will be elaborated by combining the methods for risk assessment, life cycle assessment and water resource impact assessment, thus taking into account both local (direct) effects as well as regional/global (indirect) health and environmental impacts. The outcomes of the work package shall contribute to the development of a regulatory framework in the fields of water reuse at a European level and aim at increasing overall public acceptance towards water reuse.

The specific objectives of the work package are:

  • To demonstrate risk benefit analysis as a powerful and effective tool for safety in water reuse applications
  • To emphasize environmental benefits of water reuse schemes using life cycle assessment
  • To underline the need for water reuse as a measure for effective management of scarce water resources
  • To provide an innovative assessment approach to support decision-making in water reuse
  • To elaborate relevant input towards future regulatory frameworks
